6 Week Beginners Jewellery Course with Libby Ward

Libby graduated from Staffordshire university in 2014 with first class honors in 3D Design: Crafts, specialising in contemporary jewellery. Libby works with a variety of techniques in silver and mixed materials to create thought provoking jewellery. The tactile nature of her work aims to connect people with textures and how they perceive preciousness through materials.

This course is aimed at beginners or people who have had a little taste of metal and would like to improve their skill set.
In this workshop you will learn how to saw pierce, how to add texture to metal surface, learn how to dome and press form metal, silver solder, polish and finish with your very our handmade silver ring.

All materials and equipment are included.

Activity Schedule

Week 1 – 13th September
Get on the peg!
Learn how to change a saw blade
Get to know how to saw pierce

Week 2 – 20th September
Lets add a bit of texture
Learn how to add texture to sheet metal using different hammering techniques and add lovey patterns using the rolling mill

Week 3 – 27th September
2D to 3D
Start to create 3 dimensional shapes from sheet metal using press forming and doming

Week 4 – 4th October
Its gonna get hot!
Learn the process of annealing, quenching and pickling metal, then have a go at soldering.

Week 5 – 11th October
Polishing and different finishes
In this session you will be taught how to polish metals using emery paper and a polishing wheel and also learn how to apply different finishes.

Week 6 – 18th October
Make your own silver ring
Once you’ve learned the basics its time to make your own silver ring. In this session you will learn how to measure your ring size and how much metal you will need. Then use all the technique you have learned in the past 5 weeks to create a unique silver ring.

Workshop is held in the four makers workshop
Make sure all hair is tied back.
Please wear close cover shoes
Dont wear anything to fancy
Goggles and aprons will be provided
Tea and coffee will be provided
