‘Middleport Pottery – A Victorian Innovation’ – Exhibition, from July 19th 2019

Delving into the archives of Middleport Pottery, the British Library and The National Archives, ‘Middleport Pottery – A Victorian Innovation’ reveals a 130 year-old history of ground-breaking architectural design, innovative industrial engineering and progressive social welfare.

Middleport Pottery is a Grade II* Listed heritage building and is one of Historic England’s ‘100 Places – Industry, Trade and Commerce’ for its contribution to ceramic design and production. Purpose-built by manufacturers Burgess and Leigh in 1888, the site quickly gained industry-wide recognition as the ‘Model Pottery’ of Staffordshire.

This exhibition/project was made possible with a Jonathan Ruffer Curatorial Research Grant from Art Fund
